Steinunn Kristin Thordardottir was yesterday appointed Managing Director of Islandsbanki in London. The appointment makes Steinunn the first woman to manage an Icelandic institution abroad and at 34 one of the youngest women to manage a branch of a major international bank.
The London office, which was opened in 2004, covers the whole of Southern Europe as well as the UK. The branch operates under the corporate and investment banking division of Islandsbanki.
Bjarni Armannsson, CEO of Islandsbanki, said, “I am very pleased to announce Steinunn Kristin Thordardottir as MD of our London branch. Thordardottir has played an important role in making the bank´s international business a success, and will now apply this experience to our London branch”.
Steinunn earned a BA in International Business and Politics from the University of South Carolina and a MBA from Thunderbird in Arizona. She started her career at Islandsbanki in1995 where she worked in the International and Asset Management departments before going to work for Enron for three years in 1998. Steinunn returned to Islandsbanki in 2001 as Manager of the International Corporate Credit department where she later became the Executive Director in 2003.
Steinunn Kristin Thordardottir is also an alternate member on the board of KredittBanken in Norway and sits on the board of the operating company of Islandsbanki (Rekstrarfélags ÍSB).
