Dalvik, a small town outside Akureyri in Northern Iceland, celebrated its annual Fish Day last Saturday.
The town swelled from a population of 2,000 to over 30,000 as people flocked from all over Iceland to a free seafood buffet provided by local fishermen and town members. The aim of the festival was to bring people together and have a good time whilst enjoying excellent local fish.
A variety of fish such as haddock, cod, salmon, redfish and catfish was prepared in various marinades and grilled in fourteen different areas. Dalvik residents used the longest barbecue in Iceland, measuring eight meters and equipped with twenty gas burners.
In addition to the buffet, visitors could take a cruise around the fjord, visit a fish exhibition and listen to local music.
On the Friday evening residents opened up their homes for Fish Night and served free fish soup to anyone who was passing by. A flaming torch outside the house signified that free food was on offer.
