Christmas officially begins at 6 pm today. Families gather around the dinner table to have roast smoked pork, ptarmigan or goose. Side dishes include glazed potatoes, green beans, red cabbage, a salad made of whipped cream, walnuts, celery and grapes and the traditional drink of orange soda and malt.
Some families choose to go to church at 6 pm and have dinner afterwards, whilst others might attend a midnight mass.
Between 6 and 10pm the Icelandic TV stations stop broadcasting, a tradition that goes back to the early days of Icelandic television.
After dinner, presents and Christmas cards are opened.
