The government of Iceland has made an announcement that it will fund construction of a new tunnel near Husavik to further facilitate travel in the northeast region, reports Iceland Review.
The tunnel will be made to pass through Mount Vadlaheidi and will connect Husavik with Akureyri, the second largest town in Iceland. Construction on the tunnel project is expected to commence in autumn this year and will shorten travel times between communities in the area.
Another project that has been placed high on the priority list is the widening of the Sudurlandsvegur highway that connects Reykjavik with Selfoss. The highway, which has witnessed many accidents in recent years, will be doubled in width to ensure plenty of space for motorists travelling in both directions.
