President Tarja Halonen is a well known figure for the Finnish people, who, for the most part, have no difficulty in naming her as an influential Finnish woman. According to reports in the Finnish regional daily Aamulehti on Sunday, however, most Finns have trouble coming up with another name when it comes to important women in the country.
The poll found that 55 percent of respondents could not name any influential women other than the President. According to the newspaper, 70 percent of those interviewed in the survey were unable to name three influential women from Finland.
The majority of those surveyed (80 percent) put President Halonen in their top three most influential Finnish women. Other politicians also made the list. Nine percent of respondents chose the former chief executive of Marimekko, Kirsti Paakkanen, as one of the most important women in the country while six percent of those who answered put the country’s former culture minister, Tanja Karpela, in their top three.
Minister for the Environment, Paula Lehtomaki, received some votes, as did Anne Bruila, the head of Finnish Forest Industries. Another politician of note was the former speaker of Parlimaent, Riitta Uosukainen.
The survey collected opinions from 1,000 people in Finland and was conducted by Taloustutkimus, a market research company, on behalf of Aamulehti in April this year.
