“Lithuania should be helping Iceland in it’s financial crisis,” says MP Petras Austrevicius of the liberal party in Lithuania and continues: “Iceland was the first country to help us when we were struggling for independence from the Soviet Union, which we finally gained 17 years ago.”
“We should not forget the courage of the Icelandic nation when they backed up our fight for freedom in very complex times” Says Petras Austrevicius
“By helping Iceland now we could not only show our gratitude, but also stand by the nation that stood by us when we need it”
In an interview with the BNS news agency, Petras Austrevicius did not mention any specific figures, but asserted that human and political aspects are far more important than any numbers.
Iceland was the first country to recognise Lithuania as a sovereign state in 1991.
