Jon Cunliffe, the Second Permanent Secretary at HM Treasury, and Managing Director of International and Finance Directorate in UK, sent a letter to Geir H. Haarde, Icelandic PM, earlier today.
Cunliffe was asked by Haarde to clarify the present attitude of the British Government towards Icelandic companies.
“We discussed the Treasury’s order to freeze funds owned, held or controlled by Landsbanki this morning. You asked if the Government had taken any other action against Icelandic companies. I can confirm that the Government had not taken action against any other Icelandic company.
“I hope that discussions between Icelandic officials and UK officials, HM Treasury, the Finance Service Authority, the Bank of England and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme this weekend are fruitful and that we resolve this situation as rapidly as possible.”
