David Oddsson and Eirikur Gudnason, the governors of the Central Bank of Iceland, said a fond farewell to bank staff at a meeting earlier today, MBL reported.
Eirikur Gudnason has worked in the Central Bank for forty years and hence was an important part of Iceland’s financial history. Oddsson has been chairman since autumn 2005.
The meeting was very short and crowded. Oddsson said that the bill on changes to the running of the Central Bank was at its final stage and would be passed today or tomorrow. He added that the Central Bank of Iceland has had trust all around the world and for that reason the banking system did not fail completely.
Oddsson and Gudnason thanked the staff for their cooperation and received a round of applause.
Lenka,
“Heads of Iceland central bank resign”
should be
“Heads of Iceland central bank say goodbye”
The reason of the confusion of reader here is because there was no resignation — this was farewell to Seðlabanki staff.
Davið and Eiríkur not say anything about resign — just that they were saying good bye because the bill was expected to pass that day or 27th — which in fact did — the 26th — signed by president and became law midnight on the 26th.
So they made automatically redundant as of the night of 26th (or 00:01 of 27) depending on point of view.
But they as they say before — they not resign. They just saying last words before they jobs became gone, as knew it was about to happen.
“For my part, I have never abandoned any task that I have agreed to take on, and I do not intend to do so now.”
Love him loath him, he did not.

This is the best news I have heard for a long time from Iceland apart from setting up a new government.
I really hope that Iceland is now completely cleaning up with this “family tradition² and build up a trustful government and society. And I really hope as well that the conservatives will not win the next election. This would mean that the whole story starts from the beginning, just with different faces.
Good bye and good riddance…
in a dutch newspaper i red that there was used a law to move oddsson away.A law that says that a director of a bank must be a formated ECONOMIST.
They had people like that directing the icelandic bank!!!!!!!!

This is very strange, because Oddsson – the Almighty – said this only days ago:
/// Letter from the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Central Bank of Iceland to the Prime Minister of Iceland ( last paragraph ) :
“For my part, I have never abandoned any task that I have agreed to take on, and I do not intend to do so now.”
////
Then, the Almighty had hope to remain in the den. Yesterday, hopes dissipated, and resignation arrived today!!!
I never read a greater snub: long time answer and terms of the letter were unprecedented snub to a Prime Minister. Fortunately, the bird “left” the golden nest.

Forty years in the Central Bank, and he is not the Chairman of Governors. Clearly confirms that Chairman of Governors of the Central Bank was a political position, a golden oldness, an absolute and partisan control of the economic and monetary policy. It has been a political gift! Icelanders: NEVER AGAIN!!!
Cool air in each corner of the Central Bank!
BYE BYE ODDSSON; BYE BYE !!!!!
PS: by the way … and your next den ? !!!!!!!
… And hopefully they will only see less than half of their pension – despite deserving even close to nothingt.
Unfortunately the “new” government don’t seems to do much despite small scaled populist efforts.
As said and asked before: where are changes inside the system and at which speed are the investigations going/ at which speed do we get informations?
David Oddsson should be tried for FRAUD!!!
