Keflavik International Airport in Iceland is celebrating today after being named Europe’s fourth best airport. Modern facilities, excellent customer service and spacious environs all conspired to raise Iceland’s status as the perfect mid Atlantic hub.
Passenger services at Keflavik International Airport in Iceland are unrivalled, according to Airports Council International. The organisation runs the most thorough passenger service survey in the world; and this year Keflavik achieved the accolade of being Europe’s fourth best gateway – right on the heels of Porto in Portugal, Southampton in the UK and Zurich in Switzerland, which was in first place.
The ACI Airport Service Quality Survey covers 127 different airports around the world. Passengers rate the quality of some 30 different aspects of customer service with interim performance published quarterly and full listings once a year.
Keflavik International was in first place for the final quarter 2008 in several key areas and was chosen the eighth best airport in the world with fewer than 5 million passengers annually.
“We are very satisfied with these results. Keflavik is in the elite group of world airports and our customer service is among the best anywhere. The airport is spacious and comfortable and passengers feel secure there. The credit for this great achievement goes to our staff. We look forward to a bright future with improved world economy and increased tourism,” says Bjorn Oli Hauksson, Managing Director of Keflavik International Airport ltd.
Due to its excellent location, Keflavik International Airport makes the perfect transatlantic stopover , and the ACI ASQ survey results for 2008 prove that beyond doubt.
Competitive prices, non congested operation and verifiably high service levels – make Keflavik the right choice for technical stops – for private jets and commercial airliners alike.

Hi, fully agree -this is one of the best airports in the world—–with one exception!
Last year on entering Iceland I was actually “grilled” by a Customs/Drug enforcement officer, who asked me to open my suitcase etc. which is absolutely normal, but he actually rummaged through my belongings… On my asking he said that he was looking for drugs and would have to do some tests. He disappeared into an adjoining lab and appeared after 15 minutes. On my asking about a “drug dog” he told me that this was not available at the moment… The whole procedure took about 30 minutes, which was rather unpleasant, I could only just prevent him from opening the seams of my case woith a razor blade. I call this rather unprofessional behaviour and not a very “welcoming” attitude.Nevertheless I visited Iceland again last February and-believe it or not- there was a beautiful black Labrador employed in the “sniffing” business
Don’t get me wrong: The good man had every right to check on me, but it was the way how he did it which brought me “up the wall”..
bless, bless…

Yeepy!! that makes me feel so much better!!! Well at least whoever keeps it after we have to give it away will get a first class airport.
The key point is
But anyway – simple, good airport…unless you are departuring it in rush hour :-)
But I like the Akureyri airport much more. It was always kind of funny to see foreign businessmen (first time there) when they started to ask two-three hours before departure “When are we going to airport?” (in the middle of business meeting). One hour prior to departure they were getting concerned “You your sure we won’t miss the plane?” and they couldn’t figure out why Icelander were so cool and relaxed. 30 minutes prior departure they were in panic. But 15 minute before departure Icelanders say “Time to go”. Then 5 minutes drive – and 10 MINUTES to wait before boarding. Only because of these crazy foreigners! :-)
PS. I like Iceland for such simple and easy life.
