The Icelandic application to join the European Union is expected to be discussed at a meeting of EU foreign ministers today in Brussels, Belgium. People in support as well as those against Iceland joining the European Union are all anxious to find out the results of the meeting.
Iceland officially sent in an application to join the European Union last week, personally handed to the Swedish Foreign Ministry on 23 July. Sweden holds the current EU presidency and will place high priority on Iceland’s membership application.
Sweden’s Foreign Minister, Carl Bildt told journalists that the process for Iceland joining the European Union could be shorter than other nations. “There are no shortcuts for Iceland’s membership process, although it should take a shorter amount of time for Iceland to join due to the fact that they have much influence in the European markets as well as the Schengen zone,” Bildt said.
