According to Indridi H. Thorláksson, personal assistant to the Icelandic Finance Minister, the new Icesave deal will not mean more burden than already agreed on by the Icelandic nation. At the time of writing the Icelandic government is meeting on the matter and a press conference has been scheduled for 16.00 (GMT).
Mr. Thorlaksson also said that there never had been any intention by the Icelandic nation to stop paying at 2024, but to take up the matter again at that time. Little has been said by the ministers themselves as they went in and out of the government meeting.
I hope you don’t mind an outsider barging in. I began researching Iceland a little over a week ago for an article that would cover the far Northern latitudes in terms of how they are protecting their natural resources within the global economic slump. I was shocked to discover the Icesave scandal. Our U.S. press is too busy covering such important issues as the ongoing coverage of Michael Jackson’s death and little boys who were supposed to be flying in a balloon but were not.
The premise of my article was to have been based on the fiat money; that is monies printed out with no natural resources behind them, only paper value, versus viable assets; i.e., natural resources. The far Northern hemisphere contains some of the greatest remaining natural resources; unharvested trees, abundant wild life, marine life, minerals and clean water in a world that’s going water bankrupt.
Iceland has not only a great number of natural resources, but a very resourceful people. With your small numbers, you have led the charge in green energy policies, set an example for the world with geo-thermal technology, have advanced medical skills, and have been a main directive in diplomatic relations. Quite a few accomplishments for a country of three hundred thousand people.
I would like to thank all of you for the perspective you gave. I will continue to refer back to this site as I watch the dynamics involved with my Arctic neighbors. I say this with all sincerity as I am also from a far northern latitude with similar geography and demographics. We are different, but we are also the same, and reach out to you in companionship from Alaska.
>There is no question, althingi has to propose a deal before monday or England and Netherland will take it to the court…
Spaugstofan ( our satire TV show ) had a sketch this weekend of showing 23rd October as like Friday 13th movie, with Gordon Brown in a Jason mask chasing the spine less Jóhanna and Steingrímur J. through the corridors of the government building.
I do not know what planet Jóhanna and Steingrímur are on but the Althing made it clear what was acceptable to Icelandic nation.
Why they are bringing this back now expecting some kind of different answer from Althingi is just simply crazy.
Good bye Social Democrat, Left Green coaliton.
Øystein – If nouns had tenses, we could live in a less ambiguous world…
@Jim – “I said the ORIGINAL agreement, not this new one…” – Perhaps the term “Agreedment” is better.
Easy – Of course the loan value is the same! I was talking about the agreement itself: the terms and conditions have changed since the original version. Although some of the changes (such affirming that Iceland retains control of its natural resources) seem more relevant to Icelandic public relations than normal loan guarantee agreements.
“Good scared mice”
Tere is no more burden than the original, from the begining UK said you pay me and this are the conditions, do whatecer you want but at the end this is what I want and this is what you will sign. So there is no mor burden than the original one, we were just playing the big country and that we could argue with UK, and at the end we ended up accepting everything like a gud scared mice.

I said the ORIGINAL agreement, not this new one…
corrected: European Union’s laws are VOLUMES not ‘volutes’.
Legally, there is no law that places responsibility on the Icelandic government to cover these losses. The European Union’s laws are volutes, and yet are not thorough enough to protect, prevent or even solve a relatively small financial squabble. How will the EU handle a larger crisis?
A fact the Dutch and the English are trying so desperately to hide from media attention, by taking advantage of Iceland’s financial crisis.
There is no question, althingi has to propose a deal before monday or England and Netherland will take it to the court…
The only question is who is gonna paid the bill, will it the Icelandic resident or will the state (finally) engage serious lawsuit against the true responsible of this mess ?
@Jim and Axel:
What happened with this?
“There’s no chance that Althingi MPs will be given the opportunity to ratify the original agreement again. And no chance that a majority of MPs would actually ratify it. There’s a greater chance of Gordon Brown tossing his caber with Johanna Sigurdardottir”
Thats what I call capacity to adapt very quick!!!
You make me laugh!!
Yes it means more burden:
We accept to back up the loan beyond 2024, and we accept that even if we take it to a court we have to pay regardless of the outcome of the court, that is takeing more burden. And I dont mean we shouldnt, I just want to remark what I said long time ago, WE WILL accept icesave just like the brithish and dutch want it, we were not in possition to negotiate, they are putting the conditions and we HAVE TO comply.
So, Althingi – deal or no deal?
This deal has been modified enough to decrease the possibility of Iceland running into serious problems with it,
i think we should give it state guarantee and move on to other things, plenty of problems and other matters we need to focus on.
No this only means that we want to make fun of the Icelandic people’s intelligence:
“We can take the case to a court but whatever the outcome we still have to pay it”, in other words: we can not take it to a court, BECAUSE IT WILL MAKE NO DIFFERENCE!!!
This is ridiculous, this is the most humiliating thing I have ever heard, this is really putting a nation on its knees, and make fun of them!!!
