Three people have died and a further 36 were injured in a tractor bus accident off Mando Island in Denmark. Rescue services from both Denmark and Germany took part in the rescue operations in the Danish Wadden Sea on Friday.
The identities of those involved in the tragedy are still to be released. According to TV2 News, some of the injured were members of a group of 40 retired Danes.
The accident happen around 200 metres from land on the Saelen tractor bus, which ferries tourists from Mando to the southwest of the island.
Police were rushing to move those affected from the sandbank before high tide hit at 17.30. People were also advised not to travel to the area and to avoid clogging up the region’s narrow roads.
In a statement to the media on Friday, the police said, “We appeal to members of the public who may be curious not to drive out onto the road across to Mando. The roads are narrow and difficult to navigate and people will simply block the road for rescue vehicles.”
The identities of those involved are expected to be released over the weekend or by early next week. It is still unclear what caused the complications with the long-running tourist service.
