A global crackdown on the sale of illegal sex pills over the internet has resulted in the arrests of a number of Swedes. According to reports by broadcaster TV4, Police in Sweden have shut down six online pharmacies and seized 60,000 Viagra-like impotence tablets.
The goods, which are designed to help men perform better and last longer in bed, are valued at around SEK 4 million (USD 600,000). Interpol, the international police agency, carried out the coordinated raids in 48 countries. Locations in Stockholm, Sodertalje and Kalmar were targeted in Sweden.
Spokesperson for the National Criminal Police in Sweden, Varg Gyllander, confirmed that the operation took place last week but refused to reveal how many suspects had been arrested.
“A handful of people have been arrested and we’ve also carried out a number of seizures. I can’t say exactly how many have been arrested right now. We’re in the process of tallying everything up,” he said in an interview with TT news agency.
Gyllander also added that several of those arrested would remain in custody, but claimed while Interpol has already wrapped up its investigation, the Swedish police still have work to do.
“The crime they are suspected of is unauthorised trade in pharmaceuticals. For the most part it has to do with impotence medication,” he said. “We haven’t seen the last arrest,” he added.
