Dagens Nyheter reports that the Police in Malmo has arrested a man suspected for the seemingly random shootings that have taken place in Malmo in Sweden over the last year. Chief Prosecutor Solveig Wollstad confirmed at at press briefing on Sunday that she ordered the man’s arrest on Saturday.
The 38 year old was arrested at his home in an undramatic operation by the police reation force. The man lives in an apartment in the area where several of the shootings have taken place.
The 38 year old is on probable cause suspected of murder on October 10th, 2009 as well as seven other attempted murders in Malmo. All known shootings have been aimed at people of foreign background. The police are not aware of any other connection between the victims.
The police reports that the arrested man has a Swedish background as far as is known. There have been many speculations that racist motives lie behind the shootings. Aftonbladet writes that the police turned their attention towards the arrested man following a tip from an individual.
Aftonbladet describes the man through interviews with neighbours and relatives as something of a loner with a passion for firearms. He owns two pistols for which he has arms licenses. None of the people interviewed by Aftonbladet described the man as being hateful towards immigrants.
