Iceland basketball rivals KR and IR are going head to head tonight (Thursday 9th December) in the DHL Arena in Reykjavik city.
The mid-season game, which has been described as “The Reykjavik Fight”, will begin at 19:15 and for Reykjavik basketball fans, this is a game that cannot be missed.
The KR/IR rivalry developed over many decades as both Reykjavik based teams became the most dominant forces in Icelandic basketball. Both teams have played against each other numerous times and the games have always proven to be an exciting watch.
IR was established in 1907 and over the years the club has won the most Icelandic Championships out of all the teams in Iceland, however, the team has not seen the trophy in over 30 years. IR is currently in the 12th position in the top basketball league.
KR was established in 1899 and in recent years has established itself as a force to be reckoned with in Icelandic basketball, with the trophies to show for it. KR is currently in the 4th position in the top basketball league.
