New Reykjavik sculpture revealed today

Reykjavik Art Museum officials will today present a brand new open-air sculpture to the public.

The ceremony happens on the occasion of Johann Eyfells’s newly placed sculpture Towering Earth (Receptual Cairn #7) located at Saebraut near the city centre. Einar Orn Benediktsson, chairman for Culture & Tourism in the City of Reykjavik, will formally reveal the work. Special thanks goes to shipping company Eimskip for their support, a press release states.

As a continuation on the ceremony of Johann Eyfell´s work Towering Earth, the documentary Only a Birth directed by Thor Elis Palsson will be released on DVD and will be screened at Hafnarhus at 17.00. Thor Elis Palsson and artist Hannes Larusson will start the programme by discussing the work and philosophy of Johann Eyfells.

The film follows the artists Kristin and Johann Eyfells and how, when she passed away, Johann- despite his age – packed up their entire life’s work and moved to a ranch in Texas. One hundred tonnes of sculptures, a vast collection of paintings and everything else that they had acquired throughout life went with him. The course was set for Hill County, to create the Eyfells and Eyfells foundation, a tribute to the woman he loved so much.
