A report in the Swedish media has claimed that US officials ran a stealth anti-terror operation on Swedish soil.
According to Svenska Dagbladet reporters, Sapo Swedish intelligence officers discovered that two American intelligence officials were staking out terror suspects in an illegal 2009 investigation in the Scandinavian country.
The paper said that Sapo agents made the discovery when they noticed the two individuals following the same suspects that they had been tracking. The report added that the Swedish government had not been contacted by Washington regarding the investigation, and that the two Americans quickly left the country after they were approached.
The article first makes reference to the recent stealth US effort in Pakistan in which Osama bin Laden was killed, going on to say that: “the US has also carried out intelligence against terrorists on Swedish territory. Sweden has thus become the scene of a foreign power’s terror hunt without the knowledge of the Swedish government.”
Both sides have so far remained relatively silent on the issue. Christopher Dunnett, from the US embassy in Stockholm, said to the TT news agency, “We have excellent cooperation with Swedish authorities in a several areas, including anti-terror activities,” although he would not go into details regarding the accusations in the report.
