Tours in Iceland gear up as puffin population returns home

Bustravel, a leading Iceland travel and tour provider, is gearing up to offer puffin tours to those on holiday in Iceland this summer as the country’s puffin population returns.

Iceland is home to one of the world’s largest colonies of puffins with over half of the world’s population of Atlantic Puffin coming to the country each year to breed. Puffins spend most of their lives on the water, coming ashore only to breed and raise their single puffling each year.

Throughout the winter, puffins often live a solitary life or in small groups, never setting foot on land; however, as the warm spring breeze blows, they begin their journey back to their nesting ground, the same one as where they were born.

The Bustravel tour takes participants to one of these nesting grounds, also know as Puffin Island, by boat. The tour provides a unique opportunity to observe this fun colourful bird in close proximity. Other beautiful seabirds are also to be seen amid some spectacular views of the surroundings and on Puffin Island. During the tour, the captain also offers a fresh mussel soup right from the ocean.

The tour begins at the Old Harbour conveniently located close to Reykjavík city centre and many hotels and guesthouses.

Departure for the Puffin Tour is at 10:00, 12:00, and 14:00 on Mon-Sun between 15th May–20th August 2012.
