There is much speculation that Denmark will decide to bid to host the 2018 ISAF Sailing World Championships. News might come at this week’s meeting in Copenhagen of the ISAF mid-year meeting.
Sailing has always been popular in this ‘country of islands’, where water is never far from any community, yet they have never hosted the grand prix of the sailing world. But this year Aarhus, which is slated to be the proposed host city, will host the country’s first ever 49er FX event between June 29 and July 7. In addition a Nations Cup event is scheduled for August 6 to 10 in Middelfart.
“We’re look forward to examining the specifics of the bid condition for 2018”, said Lars Lundov, CEO of Sport Event Denmark, in a recent interview.
Denmark has become an important player in ISAF, particular its defense of sailing as an Olympic sport. They are expecting more than hundred tall ships at the Aarhus event.
Thomas Capitani, the executive director of Sailing Aarhus, said, “We’ve never been more ready to host the biggest Olympic class sailing event in the world. We have been improving our skills on all different levels. Our race committee is more international and skilled because we have hosted multiple international events every year for the last ten years. The technical side of it should be no problem.”
