Seventeen year-old Aníta Hinriksdóttir came first in the 800m race at the U-17 athletics world championships in Donetsk in Ukraine yesterday. Aníta completed the run in 2 minutes and 1.13 seconds, which is just under her personal record.
Aníta was in the second place in the first 400 metres before taking the lead in the second lap, a position she kept until the end of the race, well ahead of her competitors. Ethiopian runner Dureti Edao came in second place with a time of 2 minutes and 3.25 seconds, followed by the American Raevyn Rogers.
Aníta became the first Icelander to reach the podium in U-17 athletics world championship, which is held every other year since 1999.
