A restaurant in the southern Swedish city of Malmö has been reported to police after it listed gypsy soup on its menu, stating that all the ingredients in it were stolen. After noticing the menu last week, a disgruntled female customer reported the restaurant for agitation, insisting that such veiled racism is dangerous and not acceptable.
In its daily menu, the Lundavagens Grill restaurant serves up gypsy soup, known in Sweden as zigenarsoppa, stating in brackets that the ingredients were stolen.
In response to the official complaint, restaurant owner Slavko Rasic insisted he did not intend to offend anyone with how the soup was described, but said he accepts the accusation.
Rasic said he’ll take note of the complaint, but that he feels he wasn’t specifically meaning to single out any race by calling it gypsy soup, adding that saying the ingredients were stolen was simply a private joke.
He went on to say that he could just as easily have called it Elvis soup, as the name was only a word. He added that it would be a different matter if the woman had said the soup was disgusting.
Police in Malmo are looking into the complaint, but have said they are not treating it as priority.
