A man from northern Sweden who murdered and dismembers his ex-girlfriend was sentenced to 14 years in jail.
The killer, 22, who was a friend of his 20-year-old victim, received a relatively light sentence because of his age and “personal shortcomings”, the court said. He was convicted of killing the woman before dismembering her and hiding the remains in an abandoned building.
The man was convicted last November, and was later confirmed as psychologically sound, meaning he faced jail time and not closed psychiatric care. However, he was soon after found to have behavioural disabilities.
The prosecution had wanted an 18-year sentence and has not yet decided whether it will appeal.
The victim disappeared in Boden, northern Sweden, in May last year, leading to a lengthy search by rescue and volunteer teams – which the suspect took part in – until her dismembered body was found on 20 May in an abandoned building on a military base.
The court ruled the evidence, which included the victim’s blood stains in the suspect’s car, was overwhelming. Upon further investigation, a roll of tape and a pair of gloves, both tainted with the woman’s blood, were discovered in his home.
