Eurosonic Noorderslag has revealed that Iceland will be its focus country at the 2015 conference and festival in Groningen, the Netherlands.
The group’s creative director Peter Smidt explained that with such a large number of original and relevant artistes coming from Iceland, the country highlights how such a small nation can contribute to diversity.
He went on to say that it was a logical decision to focus on Iceland at next year’s Eurosonic Noorderslag. He noted that at previous editions of the event, which began in 1986, they have presented Icelandic acts such as For a Minor Reflection, Oyama, Seabear, Asgeir, Bernsden, Retro Stefson, The Vintage Caravan and Sisy Ey. He added that they were now looking forward to showcasing the best new Icelandic acts next year.
Iceland Music Export managing Director Sigtryggur Baldursson said they are honoured to be named as the 2015 focus nation. He noted that Iceland has seen a massive increase in the export of its music over the past few years and is happy this is being recognised.
Baldursson went on to say with local radio station Ras 2 playing no less than 50 per cent Icelandic music each day and the popular Iceland Airwaves festival attracting up to 5,000 overseas visitors annually, they are enjoying a strong period for Icelandic music. He noted that Eurosonic Noorderslag can help deliver Icelandic music to mainland Europe and create new business relationships and friendships.
Eurosonic Noorderslag 2015 will be held from 14-17 January in Groningen.
