A British environmental campaigner has been honoured by the president of Iceland at a ceremony in Reykjavik.
Roger Crofts was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Icelandic Order of the Falcon by President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson in the Icelandic capital in recognition of his work in Iceland over the past two decades.
Over the years, Crofts has offered advice to the government, given talks and lectures, and challenged developers who have been affecting Iceland’s natural environment.
Presenting the award, President Grimsson said that for more than 20 years, Roger Crofts has cooperated with Icelandic public institutions and scientists dealing with environmental and vegetation issues in the country.
The president went on to say that he had enthusiastically researched the Icelandic environment; studied the work of the government, NGOs and academics; and spoken and lectured at both national and international conferences.
He noted that Crofts’s support and contribution over the years has been characterised by both great knowledge and sublime ideal of nature and environment, adding that what he had done for Iceland had been “invaluable”.
Crofts, who now resides in Scotland, has also published his own book entitled Healing the Land, which centres on soil conservation and land reclamation in Iceland.
