Four flights scheduled to depart the Icelandic capital Reykjavik on route to the US were cancelled as a result of gale-force winds on Tuesday, while a number of others were delayed, announced officials at the country’s main international airport.
Flights to Washington DC and New York on America’s east coast, Denver in Colorado and Seattle in the northwest of the country as well as another to London were cancelled by officials at Keflavik Airport, while services to Boston and Orlando and a second flight to London were also delayed.
In a day of chaos at the airport, a popular layover destination for businessmen and tourists crossing the Atlantic, flights scheduled to arrive early the next morning from New York, Washington and London were also cancelled as the Icelandic meteorological authorities revealed they were forecasting winds reaching 100 kilometres per hour.
