A lesbian couple from the UK spent £13,000 having fertility treatment and semen shipped over from Denmark in the hope that their child will resemble a Viking.
Anna and Kelly Cooke, both 34, chose the Danish sperm because they wanted a blonde-haired, blue-eyed kid and felt the British sperm wouldn’t guarantee that.
The couple, from the southeastern town of Camberley in Surrey, inseminated Kelly’s eggs after receiving vials of Danish sperm, at £300 a pop, in the post before successfully conceiving via IVF.
They decided that Anna would carry the child so they both played a part in the pregnancy and, after suffering one miscarriage, she is currently five months pregnant.
Buildings manager Kelly, meanwhile, described Danish sperm as the world’s best because of its “high quality”, noting that British sperm cost twice as much and simply “doesn’t cut the mustard”. She claimed that at least by using Danish sperm they were confident the baby would be blonde and attractive like them.
The couple, who married in February, ordered the semen from the world’s largest sperm bank, Cryos International, which has ‘Congratulations it’s a Viking’ as its motto.
But after Anna was inseminated four times with Danish sperm, she still wasn’t pregnant, so it ended up costing a whopping £5,000 for IVF treatment. However, although that worked, Anna miscarried, so they forked out another £5,000 on IVF as well as buying 10 vials of sperm from the Netherlands.
Chef Anna is now due to deliver the baby on 23 July, although the couple are not ready to find out the sex of their baby just yet. She said that they were not bothered about spending all their savings because they had a baby on the way. Kelly added that with her eggs and Anna carrying the child, they baby really would be theirs and they couldn’t be happier.
As for Danish men, ever tried the chat-up line, “I’ve got the world’s best sperm”? It may just be worth a go.
