Women’s football: Iceland’s youngsters to start tournament against Germany

Iceland’s under-17s women’s football team are to kick off the UEFA European Women’s Under-17 Championship against holders Germany in Grindavik on 22 June.

The tournament, which will be hosted in Iceland for the first time, will feature two groups of four teams before the semi-finals and finals. It will be staged in six different venues across the country, while all tickets will be free and picked up on arrival at the stadiums.

Iceland’s game against the holders will be the second to take place in Group A after the tournament opener between England and two-time champions Spain. They will then play England on 25 June before wrapping up their group campaign against Spain on 28 June.

Group B, meanwhile, will feature fellow Scandinavians Norway, as well as the Republic of Ireland, France and Switzerland.

The group stage will run from 22-28 June, with the semi-finals being played out on 1 July and the final – in Valsvollur, Reykjavik – taking place on 4 July.
