There is an event in Kjarvalstaðir in Reykjavik that is not to be missed this coming Friday. The Iceland Dance Company presents a happening, directed by duo Erna Ómarsdóttir and Valdimar Jóhannsson in the Reykjavik Art Museum at Kjarvalstadir on Friday, August 26th at 4pm. The title of the work is Eternal Echoes: Homage to Kjarval and the event is admission free.
Together with Ómarsdóttir and Jóhannsson, Iceland Dance Company is collaborating with the artists Matthew Barney, Gabríela Friðriksdóttir, Ragnar Kjartansson and Margrét Bjarnadóttir on a significant work, Sacrifice, to be premiered next year in context with LÓKAL dance festival and the Reykjavik City Theatre. The current performance is one of several events written and performed by the artists, together or individually, in preparation for the larger work.
The event is part of Everybody’s Spectacular performance festival and the current Jóhannes S. Kjarval exhibition Mind and World. Kjarvalsstaðir houses the works of one of Iceland’s most influential and recognized painters, Jóhannes S. Kjarval. The exhibitions at Kjarvalsstaðir focus primarily on paintings and sculptures of the established masters of modern art. The building is a fine example of Nordic modernism; it features floor-to ceiling windows that look onto the beautiful Klambratún Park, its definitely a place worth visiting while in Reykjavik.
