A fraudster, who claimed to be crippled by cerebral palsy, has been sent to jail after being caught taking part in a table tennis tournament. The 32-year-old man, who claimed to be confined to a wheelchair, was sentenced to three years in prison by a Swedish court after it heard that he had conned country’s Social Insurance Agency out of millions of kroner.
The man’s secret and active life was discovered in April after police used covert cameras to record him making phone calls and participating in a table tennis tournament. He was found guilty of aggravated subsidy crime and aggravated fraud by Halmstad district court in southwest Sweden.
The Iraqi citizen will be deported to his homeland after serving his sentence in Sweden and has been ordered to pay SEK 4.7 million (USD 640,000) in compensation to the agency. A 51-year-old man, thought to be the brains behind the scheme, was also jailed for 21 months.
According to The Local, eight people played a part in the deception. One has been sentenced to 30 months behind bars, while another five may received suspended jail terms for assisting in the offence. The man is expected to appeal against the conviction.
