Yoko Ono, the wife of former Beatles legend, recently unveiled a lighthouse in honour of her late husband, John Lennon.
The lighthouse is located on Videy Island and stands 25 metres high. Dedicated to peace, the Peace Tower is inscribed with the lyrics of Lennon’s song ‘Imagine’ translated into 24 languages.
Yoko Ono said in an interview with the New York Post, “This is an answered prayer because my first time in John’s house he talked about building a lighthouse. I never knew how to conceptualise that. I never believed this could be reality.”
The tower will be lit on Ono’s husband’s birthday (October 9th) and will stay illuminated until the anniversary of his death (December 8th). Every year the tower will send out its light during this time.
“I realised that, with contrasting the two symbolic dates, it gives an understanding of the shortness of life, and eternity of the spirit. It reminds one how brief life can be and is significant even for those not into John Lennon’s life,” explained Ono.
In addition, the tower will be lit for special occasions including New Year’s Eve and for a week in the spring time.
“Someday this tower will be lit 365 days for 24 hours [a day], but for now I’m not pushing it. Forever is a long time,” said Ono.
The tower, located just off the coast in Reykjavik, was constructed from a wishing well. Visitors will be able to contribute their wishes into the well, filing it with hopes and prayers.
John Lennon died in 1980 after being shot in the streets of New York City.
my comment is the translation of imagine peace in pilipino ,it should not ilarawan ang kapayapaan ,it should be isipin ang kapayapaan.or isaisip ang kapayapaan.
