A Swedish man has gone into hiding in Norway after claiming his wife attempted to poison him on several occasions.
Speaking to Aftonbladet, the man, known only as ‘Anders’, said he fled the country after his 33 year-old spouse spiked his glass of cola with antifreeze.
”I never sleep more than one night anywhere. I am scared out of my wits,” ‘Anders’ told the newspaper.
The couple, from Linköping, southern Sweden, were only married in January and are expecting their first child in the New Year, when they were planning to move to Norway together. According to the man’s friends, however, his wife had wanted a divorce for some time before her husband fell ill a few weeks ago.
”I told the police that I was given a glass of Coke and then I was suddenly dead drunk and fell down some stairs,” said Anders. ”Then she [his wife] said ‘Leave. You can’t die here in the house’,” he claimed. ”She left me there in a helpless condition,” he added.
Police confirmed that glycol was present in the glass that Anders drank from, but have released the woman from custody claiming the allegations against her were weaker than first appeared. Anders believes, however, that the authorities are not taking the situation seriously because he is now in Norway.
”They say that it’s her word against mine. But how can that be with the injuries I have sustained,” he said, adding that he had given the police his medical records documenting previous unexplained illnesses that could be down to other attempted poisonings.
The woman’s lawyer, Thomas Wasteson, told Aftonbladet, however, that his client is adamant she is innocent. ”She denies having anything to do with this,” he said.
You never know, maybe she did, maybe she didn’t. Seems humans are the same everywhere. I still have an idealized image of Norway from my years there long ago.
