The works of modern Icelandic artist Gunnhildur Hauksdottir are currently on display at the Hafnarhus Art Gallery in central Reykjavik.
The installations and video works tackle the subjects of humanity, the environment and mankind’s frames of reference, and contain simple allusions which are open to any number of interpretations.
In her celebrated work Cultus Bestiae which is on display, Hauksdottir employs images which she has taken from show horses in Germany. In them she captures the interaction between horse and jockey and the powerful raw and mystical energy of the animals.
Hauksdottir graduated from the Icelandic Academy of the Arts in 2001 and continued her studies in visual arts at Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam between 2002 and 2005. She is a member of the international Dieter Roth Academy and has worked in Berlin for the past few years.
Hauksdottir’s installation is the final part of the first exhibition series of eight artists. A catalogue of works by all eight artists is scheduled for release on 24 April 2008.
The exhibition is on display until 27th April and is curated by Olof K Sigurdardottir. Admission is free.
