The Icelandic men’s handball team played a promising game in the Olympic semi-final at midday today (Icelandic time). In an overly exciting match they managed to beat the Spaniards 36-30 and move on to the final.
Starting the game by five successive scores, they increased the chances of getting Olympic gold medals and no Icelander doubted their victory over Spain although the score difference was equal at times.
Iceland has made it to the Olympic semi-finals once before, but did not win a medal. France defeated Croatia 25-23 in the first semi-final match earlier today.
The final between Iceland and France will be contested on Sunday 24 August.

Congrats to Iceland and good luck in the finals! I’m an American, and since there was no local team to root for, I decided on a whim to root for Iceland and haven’t been disappointed yet!
I have fond memories of my two months living in Iceland as an exchange student, and I’ve been cheering along with all of you Vikings throughout the Olympics. So cheers from a friend in California!
This Iceland team is like a volcano which is about to erupt! I hope Iceland will win France and good luck!
My Gratulations to your handboll team. You have played a great tournament and as a Nordic citizen I really wish that you will win the final. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.
Best regards,
Bo-Erik from Finland
Sorry for the mistake Danes, quite right it was a draw. Got lost in my happiness of victory, Now we just need to beat the france, go Iceland we are thinking of you!
We (The proud Icelanders) DREW with Denmark. We leveled the score from a penalty line(7 meter) 2-4 seconds before end of game. BUT NOW WE’RE IN THE FINALS………. :)
Brilliant, I am a swedish citizen playing golf with European airlines. During the years I have made many very good friends on Iceland working for Icelandair. I have visited Iceland twice and my feelings for Iceland is very positiv. What happened today in Beijing made me feel so happy. A small nation like Iceland and now you are playing for the gold medal in the
Oolympics. Even if you win or loose, this is probably the greatest sporting triumph in modern times. I am so proud to be a self-nominated non-official ambassador fot Iceland
Gratulerer kjære naboer. Dere kan være stolte over gutta i Beijing=)
Lykke til i finalen. Hele Norge heier på dere.
Here in Sweden we are very excited about Icelands victory in the semifinals. Sweden has no gold in these Olympics and personally I don’t think we’ll get one. But a goldmedal in handball for our brothers in Iceland certainly would ease our pain.
Go Iceland Go!!!!!
I am also one of the Icelandic vikings..
But we did not win the European Champions… That was a draw!
I am one of those 310.000 proud Icelanders. You should also not forget that along the way we have also won the European champions Denmark, the world champions Germany and former Olympic champions Russia. The Vikings from Iceland showed their real face!
