Icelandic TV Channel 2 informed that a letter was sent from Downing street 10 to the Icelandic Embassy last night. The cabinet of Gordon Brown sent a letter in which earlier statements have been considerably toned down.
The statement sent to the Ambassador of Iceland in London says that the terrorism law applied to Icelandic companies doing business in the UK only applied to Landsbanki (Icesave).
According to Sverrir Haukur Gunnlaugsson, the Ambassador of Iceland in UK, this letter indicates strongly that Gordon Brown is toning down his reactions.
Gunnlaugsson believes that this declaration will help Icelandic companies in the UK and also improve bilateral relationships.
“I have been an ambassador and working for the foreign ministry for 38 years and I have never experienced anything like what we went through over the last week,“ said Gunnlaugsson.
“Our phone system nearly had a meltdown and we had to deal with very angry Brits,“ he added.
Armed police now protects the Icelandic Embassy due to threats that have been made.
GreatDune:
“f Uk had a law that granted them powers to freeze the assets of any privately held company as they see fit, then I suppose Browns actions could be defended from a perspective of the law.
But if you had these laws no doubt you would be kicked from the EU and WTO, and believe me you don’t really want that to happen.”
We do have a law that allows us to seize the assets of any individual or nation who threatens the security or economic well being of the UK.
We also have a law that allows insolvent bank seizures. We used them.
Still happy members of the EU and NATO and absolutely no problem with either organisation.
JJ: Oppinons like yours are very dangerous, and have absolutely no place in a society based on common law.
If Uk had a law that granted them powers to freeze the assets of any privately held company as they see fit, then I suppose Browns actions could be defended from a perspective of the law.
But if you had these laws no doubt you would be kicked from the EU and WTO, and believe me you don’t really want that to happen.
cfood13: You are right we are headed for a new society. And it is a society where people will save money to buy consumer goods. And not have their over consumption financed by a boom in the real estate market.
Also we will see companies more focused on earning money so the can invest in their competitiveness, and thereby gaining an edge over their competitors. Instead of pleasing some hedge fund, or pension fund.
that world isn’t something new, in fact it bears many resemblances with the world of my parents/grandparents
Yes Landisbanki did put up some strange message in their site, the reason for this have never been explained. That explanation is one I’d really like to hear, but they didn’t move their funds out of the UK. Because if they had, there wouldbe no assets to freeze.
@ JOHN
Surely you must understand the protocol here.
The Goverment takes power of the bank and freezes all monies in & out for a period of time to check calculate and understand the scenairo of what is going on. I do belief this is standard protocol in this scenairo. The money was frozen for investigation certainly we were informed of this here, again maybe the media in the Uk did not share this ?
All Gordon Brown is trying to do is get votes..
he claims we are the “bad guys” and crushes them so he looks like a hero , infact the assets of the banks are worth more then they ow so theres no reason on doing this … besides if something happens and they arent enough then the icelandic goverment will guarantee that the british ppl will get their money.
i dont rly care though i mean we get hotter women , we have higher living standards and the only thing that will happen to us is that we will need to pay higer taxes for some time and maybe a little decrease of products coming into the country for the first few months .
Look, this issue between iceland and england has, in fact, nothing to do with nationality… it has to do with the entire worlds’ trend of living. Everyone wants something for nothing these days and everyone feels that paper can replace hard work and character… whether it´s a degree or money, this false title given to those holding these types of paper is leading us into the abyss… no ones´ hero is the welder or the cook, it´s the man in the suit, no matter if he is a liar or an addict or something of that sort… This collapse is necessary in order to restore values that control and regulate a society… Integrity, character, and togetherness…. We, and i mean WE, got ourselves here by ignoring past generations who tried to warn us that there is no such thing as easy money… I am American by the way… GO OBAMA!!!!!
Tim, give me your bank account and all the cash in it and you have no access to it then we are even !
I don’t get you GreatDane the Icelandic government froze the UK accounts FIRST. To be honest Icelandandic government (not the people) will use any accuse they can to divert the fact they messed up big time.
‘“UK did absolutely the right thing in freezes all Icelandic bank assets.”
So you totally agree in hijacking laws meant to combat financing of terrorism, in order to freeze assets of a private company that have no ties whatsoever with terrorism?’
Uh, so I owe you 4 billion pounds.
You don’t think I am going to repay you.
You think I will probably go belly up within days.
You *could* get the money off of me, lawfully, but using a law that was generally intended for other purposes.
But, that might incur some moralistic opprobrium.
Still, you’d be 4 billion pounds better off.
Now, you tell me, what would you do?
You are, as they say, having a laugh.
When will some of you slaves finally open your eyes and see the reality of what’s going on? The GB puppets in both the UK and US are just that PUPPETS! They are just doing what their bankster bosses tell them to do. Open your eyes, grab your nuts, and pull open the damn curtain before it’s too late!!!
Nice one Great Dane I share your comments Totally !
And Trevor, you are not here in Reykjavik, You hav enot had 7 of your friend sloose their job because of Gordon Brown, the stories of shops being busy is crazy, people ar ebuying lots of food and stocking up on pasta and Virgin oil, tins of tuna etc, But the Restaurants are quiet, and people are, going to house parties not down town, to save money !
“Elsewhere I have read reports of how steady flows of Icelanders were walking out of electric shops on Saturday carrying large plasma screen TVs. Shops were buzzing, apparently.”
The reports we get here in Scandinavia are the opposite, please don’t take the icelanders for fools they are well aware of the dark clouds gathering on the horizon. So someone bought a new tv-set just as some reporter was passing an electronics store, what does that prove? I am confident that retail sales have dropped sharply over the last week.
“There’s no way Kaupthing would have made it to the end of the year”
How do you know this? Do you have information that no one else had? I work in Banking, and we knew that it would be troublesome for Kaupthing bank, as interbank loans were freezing up. But none of us saw this collapse comming. But apparently you had knowledge that not even Bank of England had, I just wish you would have called someone and presented your information.
“UK did absolutely the right thing in freezes all Icelandic bank assets.”
So you totally agree in hijacking laws meant to combat financing of terrorism, in order to freeze assets of a private company that have no ties whatsoever with terrorism?
Whilst trying to be sympathetic to the plight of ordinary Icelanders, I am getting sick of this “innocent child” act. Gordon Brown bullying little Iceland.
Iceland is little, which is all the more reason why it should not have allowed it’s banks to leverage and waltz into others’ economies financing buying sprees of half the High St. Nor to heavily market high interest deposit accounts without the finance in place to honour guarantees.
Iceland thought it could fight with the big boys. That was it’s decision, and now things have imploded it has to meet it’s obligations and stop whimpering like a scolded puppy. All this rubbish about Brown destroying the Icelandic economy – you had done a very good job of this yourselves, without need of help from Brown. There’s no way Kaupthing would have made it to the end of the year – and given the apparent lack of guarantee for Icesave, and the mixed messages coming from Iceland’s government, the UK did absolutely the right thing in freezes all Icelandic bank assets.
Elsewhere I have read reports of how steady flows of Icelanders were walking out of electric shops on Saturday carrying large plasma screen TVs. Shops were buzzing, apparently.
A big contrast to the UK, where everyone is batoning down the hatches and belatedly becoming frugal and realistic. I suggest Icelanders do likewise, as it’s going to take some taxation in the coming years to pay off a debt 5 times your GDP. And that is GDP measured in the good times, by the way.
Kind of reminds me of when Lea&Perrins in Scandinavia had put poisonous “sudan red” in their worcester sauce, by god we should have seized their assets in Scandinavia for this true act of terrorism!!!!!
All we need for him (Gordon Brown) to do now is to admit, that it is misuse of terror laws to seize assets of companies who have nothing to do with terror.
And maybe we will even hear the London Police admit it is wrong to shoot innocent people in the head.
It sounds to me that someone has informed Gordon Brown of the 100,000 Brits that work for Icelandic Companies in the UK, and all the facts that have been said officially.
But How on earth can they say such a thing when history shows that Kaupthink, couldnt balance its accounts on Thursday and went under ? ? ? theyre Accounts were frozen due to the Terrorism law inforced on them, To me this sounds like the final scenes of the Film TRADING PLACES : (
On behalve of a lot of Britons, i apologize for the harm the Brown cabinet has caused you!
